provided he leaves for England within One month from the date of such expiration
The Salary to be paid to the person engaged shall be at the rate of One hundred and fifty dollars ($150) per mensem which amount shall include night work when such is required. The Government shall also pay him allowances after the rate of Twelve dollars ($12) per mensem for chair hire and Seven dollars ($7) per diem of ten hours when employed on Tide work or other works of an urgent nature on Sundays and Public Holidays. Half salary will commence from date of embarkation. Full salary from the date of arrival in Hong Kong.
The duties of the person engaged shall be to supervise the construction of Granite Ashlar Masonry in Sea Wall Storm Water Drains to the filling in and reclaiming of ground and the construction of Roads Channels Footpaths to and all other duties which he is to perform by the Surveyor General or other duly authorised Officer of the Government. He shall in all things be subservient to and obey the orders and directions of the Government and shall not directly or indirectly engage or be concerned in any other service or business whatsoever or receive commissions or profits of any kind and he shall use his utmost exertions to promote the interests of the Government.
In the event of the Government becoming desirous of determining the engagement of the person engaged at any time during the currency of the same it shall be at liberty, giving him Three months notice (signed by any authorized Officer) determinable on any day, or on the Government paying him one month's Salary and in either case he shall be provided with a free passage second class by steamer to England including railway fare third class to place of abode. The Government shall also provide him with a similar free passage if by reason of ill-health not caused by his own impropriety of conduct he shall under the certificate of a Medical Officer appointed for that purpose by the Government be discharged from or compelled to give up his engagement with the Government and provided he shall be desirous of returning to England but if he shall resign his appointment from other cause he shall refund to the Government or to the Crown Agents for the Colonies the amount paid for his passage to the Colony (including railway fare) and shall have no claim to a return passage. The return passage if required must be claimed within one calendar month.
If the person engaged shall at any time neglect, refuse or from any cause (other than illness not caused by his own impropriety of conduct) become unable to perform or comply with all or any of the provisions of this Agreement or all or any of the duties required of him or of the orders or directions of the Government or its representatives or shall correspond verbally or otherwise directly or indirectly in or about the affairs of the Government with any person not in the employment of the Government, or any...
