Sir,
35 Queen's Road,
Hongkong, 20th September 1897
re William Baker
May we beg the favour of a reply to our letter of the 3rd instant. Mr Baker is naturally very anxious to present his case to His Excellency with the least possible delay, and we find a great difficulty in placing the merits before the Government in the absence of the evidence which we have asked for.
We are, Sir,
Your most obdt. Servants,

re William Baker
Our client does not wish to appear to be unduly importunate, but it is of very great importance to him to be furnished with the copy of the evidence which we have asked for. So far as it is possible at present to do so, his Petition has been drafted, but it cannot be properly completed without the evidence in question. May we beg the favour of a reply - a favourable one it is hoped - to our application?
We have the honour to be,
Your most obedient Servants,
(sd) Deacon & Hastings
The Honble.
J. H. Stewart Lockhart,
Colonial Secretary.
