Here ... is still one important link of communication, a path from the Wanchai Gap by Middle Gap to Wong Nei Chong Gap on the Southern sides of Mounts Cameron and Nicholson.

I drew Your Excellency's attention to the importance of this road shortly after my arrival here in 1895, and have written several letters to the War Office on the same subject. The last is dated 28 April 1897.

Our purchase of the Mount Austin Hotel on the Peak above Victoria Gap, and its occupation towards the end of the year, is a point of some tactical importance as it will enable us to house 400 men ready to defend that section; by mountain route to hand to the defenders of Nr 2 Section, or in 30 minutes to embark at the pier in Victoria to reinforce any threatened point. But a glance at the map will, I think, convince anyone of the necessity of this missing link in our communications in which I think the quartering of this force on the Peak emphasizes the necessity of.
