184,540, while for 9 months of 1897 they are represented by

253,133 and 164,540 respectively.

The salary of Assistant Government Marine

Surveyor remains the same as was fixed in 1888, viz., $2,400

per annum.

In Calcutta the Assistant Marine Surveyor

draws a salary of Rs. 6000 per annum, rising to Rs. 7300, with,

in addition, a conveyance allowance of Rs. 420 per annum.

The work of Assistant Marine Surveyor in

this Colony can neither be less arduous nor less responsible

than in Calcutta.

Since my last letter I trust my services

have given the same satisfaction as formerly and that you

may be pleased to recommend me to His Excellency the Governor

for an increase in salary.

I have, &c.,

(Sgd.) James Macalister, Jr.

Asst. Govt. Marine Surveyor.
