I also respectfully ask to bring before His
Excellency's notice a fact that in June 1890 I refused an
appointment offered to me from the ureat "Veritas“ Regis-
try of shipping to join that Society as Engineer Surveyor
in Liverpool at a salary off190 per annum with an increase
of £12 a year, but preferred to enter the Colonial service
(after a competitive examination) as Assistant Marine Sur-
veyor of this port at $200 a month. The collar then being
worth three shillings and nine pence.
In December 1891,ay predecessor (with His
Excellency's consent) resigned his appointment after six-
teen months service, through the remuneration being inade-
quate and I was appointed Principal surveyor in January
1892, at the sale salary he received less the examination
fees for Engineering candidates which up to that time had
always been given to the Marine Surveyor as a perquisite.
The cuties of the Government surveyor in
Hong-Kong as you are aware, Sir, are very responsible, ana
very important. The work of surveying Hulls, Boilers,Machine-
ry, Steam
earlaunches, Tonnage, co., in addition to office work, is
very hard indeed for the present remuneration and I believe
I can positively say that after a service of 15 years coing
the class of work I have mentioned, in a climate like this
