I had better deal with Private note, BC. Lee. The Juridical discussion for dignified despatch is not to have been separately reported. In the P.O. there have been several insignificant increases of staff. The total cost of the Dept. increased due to increased cost.
This increase need not be from $207,361 to $211,785. Of this $1400 are cost of mail subsidy during the Fall in Exchange. The cost of lighting the Registration shown has increased $1200.
Registrar General's Dept. The Governor specially appeals on behalf of the increased salary of the Chinese Clerk & Collector. The increase is from $540 to $780.
We have already sanctioned for effect of the appointment of 2 new Student Interpreters whose cost with Teachers amounts to $1320 this year. New appts have been sanctioned. We do not seem to have heard before of the 4 probationers mentioned on p.33. They will cost $175 this year.
Additional medical expenses are proposed, including Dr. Thomson's salary, a total of $7120.

Police. The new appt of Chief Detective Inspector at $1680 per annum was approved on 11/4/93. (Author despatch not referred to) Inspector Stanton at first appointment had been got rid of in connection with the gambling scandal.
The increased pay of whole police has been observed. Incidental Expenses (38% increase from $1340 to $2700, having been underestimated in 1897). Under other Changes ask why maintenance of Juvenile first offenders in Reformatory suddenly increases from $400 to $1800 per annum.
