The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, who was the first to intimate the probability of a large demand and has urgently counselled a bold policy. The soundness of his advice and justification for adopting it are demonstrated by the events which have occurred: and I here avail myself of this opportunity to record the indebtedness of this Government to Mr. V. Jackson for his advice in this important matter.
In conclusion I desire to state that so long as this Government acts in the matter of the supply of subsidiary coin with the same care and consideration as hitherto, the requirements of this Government in regard to the supply of such coins should be accepted as genuine and fulfilled with promptitude.
