July, yet he corroborates Sam Yin in the following important
points.
(a) The daily sums that he says he put up
for Baker, Stanton, & Corcoran (viz: $10, $5, $5 respectively)
correspond with the amounts set against these officers
in Sam Yin's List.
(b) He says that on the packet for Corcoran
he wrote the Chinese character for "Lun".
Now it is a remarkable fact that in Sam Yin's
list (in which Corcoran himself is designated as Luk Tau
Green Head of Police) there occurs (vide page 7 of the
translation of List H forming enclosure N in my report of
the 27th of July last) an entry "Lun's boy" which Sam Yin,
when asked to explain it, said meant "Corcoran's boy".
(c) He says that in the package of money that
he made up daily for Chu Tsai Kam was included a sum of
$1.50 or $1.40 a day for No.47.
That this particular lot of money was fetched
by a man named A Pong till A Pong was banished and that
after that the money was paid to Chu Tsai Kam.
Now a reference to letter No.296 of the
6th instant, forwarding Sam Yin's statement regarding the
entry in his list referring to P.S. 47's number, will show
that $1.55 was the sum set against the Sergeant's number,
