a hundred dollars in the Bank (March 1873) and from that date
until 1884 I saved from $300 to $600 yearly. About 3 months after
arrival I was appointed to the Fire Brigade and transferred to
7 Station where I was also telegraph clerk and had Sing Sang
money for over two years until shortly before I got promoted. In
January 1878 I got a fourth class medal and in October 1879 I got
a third class medal and appointed in charge of the canteen and by
this time I rose in the Fire Brigade to the rank of foreman
which made my pay in all to $88. I had to leave in the Colony. I
never went to pic-nics. I never went to European Women's houses
or public houses or hotels. My canteen account never exceeded $5
for liquor. The only way that I spent any money was in subscrip-
tions so on that account I had money of my own and any person
acquainted with me would never believe that I would do anything
mean or dishonest. I hope, Sir, that you will make more enquiries
before you put my case before the Governor.
