Sergeant Phelps (P. S. No. 1) present:-Sau Yin states: I am a prisoner in Victoria Gaol undergoing a sentence of 9 months imprisonment with hard labour for keeping a common gaming house at No. 2, Wa Lane.

The paper produced was seized by the Captain Supt. of Police at No.3 East Street on the 21st. June, the day that I was arrested.

The paper is a list of persons who were in receipt of hush money, the hush money was paid in respect of the gambling house I kept at No.2, Wa Lane.

I see the entry "No.1. 7 that means that I paid 70 cents a day to Tang Lo Sam for European Sergeant No 1. I do not know the Sergeant. I have never spoken to him. I do not know the Sergeant present. I know that No.1 did duty on the Canton wharf. I do not know where he was stationed. The payment was begun last year in the hot weather. I cannot remember the exact month but I think between the 6th. and 7th. moons. No.1 had come several times and disturbed Wa Lane and my fokis reported to me that No.1 had disturbed the place.

They said he was always going into the Lane and that they had to shut the door of the gambling house to avoid him. He never went into the house or broke open the door. But my fokis had to run away to avoid him.
