1. Utter Singh, Indian Sergeant Major cliarged
with money lending to Mr. da Rocha, formerly telephone clerk
Central Station, while still in the Police Service: -
Mr. da Rocha, Signalman in the Harbour Depart-
ment states:-
"I see the documents produced, they are in my
handwriting. They were written by me on the 16th. September
1895. I was at that time employed as Telephone Clerk in the
Police Department. I an acquainted with the Sergeant Major.
I treat him like a friend. I asked him about a month before
the date of the letter produced if he could get any Indians
to lend me some money as my family was sick. He answerea me
the day after that he had got an Indian to lend me the
money. It was $50 that I wanted. He told me the Indian in
question was a watchman employed at Hunghon. He did not tell
me in what employ. I then made a promissory note which I can
produce. It was made out in the name of Gunda Singh. I pro-
mised to pay $75 for the use of the $50. There was no limit
of time fixed, A day or two after I received from the hands
of the Sergeant Major the sum of $50.I received it at the Central Station opposite the Telephone Office in the small
