the date because the following night was my husband's lodge night, and on that same night I attended a Sergeant's dance of the West York Regt. That was the only time I had been to that dance by myself. That was the only time that I had seen a Chinaman at Mrs. Mitchell's house. I am quite sure it was on the 12th of March. The West Yorks have their dance every Friday. The lodge has its regular meeting on the second Sunday of each month, unless it falls on a day when there's a special meeting.
I have only missed the West York's dance once. My husband is very regular at his Lodge. I am helped in fixing the date because my husband came to defendant's house about 8 p.m. to fetch me on that same day. He hasn't been there since, until last Saturday. I left him at defendant's house at 10 p.m. I might recognise the samples if I saw them. Out of the four samples shown me, I recognise one as one of those shown.
It was a bright green one shown me by Mrs. Mitchell on the 11th March - Mrs. Mitchell told me she wanted the sick to send home by the Wations. They went away at the end of March. I am quite positive that it was the day before the West York's dance that I saw Cheung at defendant's house.
To the Court: The sample shown me is the one I admired [and marked 'F']. The samples are four in number. I can't say if Mrs. Mitchell asked Cheung to leave the samples. I had not seen Cheung before that day nor afterwards, until I saw him in the box here a few days ago.
I read the report of the proceedings before the Magistrate on the first day - Saturday, the 14th July in the "China Mail" on the Sunday morning following. It was a full report. I noticed that defendant in his cross-examination of Cheung did not refer to me very definitely. On reading the report, I came to the conclusion that that was the man with the samples. I knew therefore that the statement of Cheung as to a conversation with defendant was not true. I sent for Mrs. Mitchell on that Sunday and she came to my house. We spoke about the matter then, and again on the Monday. I went to defendant's house...
