I knew a man called Cheng On [identifies him]. I have seen him in connexion with this business. I saw him on or about the 2nd March last. He came to my place at No.8 East Street. He came by himself. I had a conversation with him. When he came up he said he was sent by No.12. In No.13's Section there was no more gambling carrying on now. No.12 had sent him to give me a message. He said, "No.12 says you should give him a dollar a day." Then I said "no doubt he went in to lie in wait for some time in the first and chased after the jokesters and beat them? If I allow him a dollar a day, he must not chase or beat my fokis." Cheng On said, "Yes, if you give him money, he will not chase or beat your fokis." Then the conversation ended. I agreed to pay a dollar to No.12. Chong On suggested that I should pay him 10 cents for his trouble. I agreed to do this. He said, "You can hand the money to Jangham and I will receive it from him." I did not see him again after this. The first payment was made to Jeny Kam on the 14th March. There was only one interview between Cheng On and myself about the matter. That was on the 12th March.
