"If he is able to speak even a few words, I will have this conversation with you. His proper name is Sam Yun, he is an idiot, totally unfit. I said "Is that so, but that place is not in your section. I don't know whether those people are free to do it or not; if they don't agree, then it is a disgrace." Then defendant said "So and so". He said those people who have control of that section "eat flesh; I am content to eat bones". I said to defendant, "Well, if you like me to, I will ask about it to-morrow." Then he said, "Very well, so and ask. Don't fail to give reply." Then I left. This conversation was carried on in English and Chinese. Defendant spoke Chinese, I spoke English, we both mixed Chinese and English. I cannot speak much English - I meant pidgin English, most of the conversation was in pidgin English.
In consequence of this conversation, I went next day and saw Tung Kam. Tung Kam took me near the door of 3 East Street and then I went up to the second floor and saw Sam Yun. [Sam Yun called in and identified.] Nobody but Sam Yun and myself was there. I said "Ah Yun, there is no gambling going on in No. 125 Section. This is what Sing told me; he has some small children and he wishes your place to help him with some expenses." Sam Yun said "Yes, did he tell you to come and ask about it?" I said "Yes". Sam Yun said, "I will give very little." I said "How much." He said "A dollar, if he wants it I will give it to Tung Kam." I said "That will do, give it to Tung Kam and Tung Kam will hand it over to me?" Then Sam Yun said "I will give you 10 cents more for yourself." That finished the conversation.
I saw Tung Kam again after that. I also saw defendant and gave him the reply. I cannot give you the exact day, but it was either the 16th or the 11th day of the 2nd moon - the 12th or 18th March last. I told defendant what Sam Yun said. He said "How much?" I said "A dollar." Then defendant said "Master, one dollar can do." Then his wife told me to go and collect daily. His wife was present. They were both smiling. I said to defendant "I will give..."
