I should mention that Mr Francis, Q.C., was retained by the Crown for the trial of Inspector Witchell in Supreme Court, as he had already appeared for the prosecution at the preliminary hearing of the case by the Police Magistrate, and had an intimate knowledge of all the circumstances.

I very much regret that an officer of Inspector Witchell's position should have betrayed the trust and confidence hitherto reposed in him, and that I have been compelled by the fact of his conviction to order his dismissal from the Police Force, in which he has served for 15 years.
