50 cents per day. About one year afterwards I told the inter-

preter that $1.50 was too little and I wanted $2.50 per day

From that time until 21st. June, 1897, I received $2 per day

and the interpreter fifty cents. I used to receive the money

once a week while the gambling was going on but if there

was no gambling he did not pay me. I used the money for my

own private purposes and never told the Inspector and he

knew nothing about it. This I affirm to be the truth. The inter

preter used to give me the money in the kitchen when no one

was present.

And I make this solemn declaration conscien-

tiously believing the same to be true and by virtue of the

provisions of "The statutory declarations Act 1835".

Declared by the declarant Maria Antonia da Silva at Victoria in the Colony of Hongkong this 22nd, day of July, 1897, through the inter- pretation of Capitolino João Xavier of Victoria aforesaid, the said Capitolino João Xavier having

been also first declared that he had truly distinctly and audibly interpreted the contents of this document to the said declarant and that he would truly and faithfully interpret the declaration about to be administered unto her.
