The fees for the certificates werepaid to the

shroff in the Registrar General's Department in the usual

way and were paid by him into the Bank to the credit of the

Government.

The statement of Ip Pak Shau so far as it

relates to this second charge is false.

3. I did not on the 15th, July 1897 or on any

other day offer the sum of $50 to Ip Pak Shau to induce him

to leave the Colony or to prevent him from doing his duty

by disclosing to the HongKong Government any facts either

within his knowledge or otherwise with reference to the

first and second, charges.

The statement of Ip Pak Shau so far as it

relates to this third charge is false.

4. In answer to the three charges generally,

I say that I have been in the Government service for nearly

38 years during which period I have served the Government

well and faithfully and have borne a uniformly good cha-

racter.

I have raised myself by my own exertions

and by my faithful service to the position which I now hold,

I am a wicower with 10 children six of whom

are entirely dependent on me.

The charges brought against me on the informa

tion of Ip Pak Shau are unfounded. He being on his own admis -

sion the recipient of bribes and being on his own showing

a man of untrustworthy character is attenting to implicate
