carried on from 5.30 am to 12 midnight. There were 15 watchmen employed, 8 for tally and 7 for watch. They were stationed at Temple Street, Canton Road & Upper Lascar Row at the North and South entrances of the lane. They worked in watches of 4 hours on and 4 hours off. There were 4 men in each watch & 3 in the other. It was the duty of the Watchmen to raise the alarm if the Police came.
Sam Yin looked after the money matters and the property pledged. The watchmen used to go home about 7 or 8 o'clock. Sam Yin came to see that the game was properly started and again in the evening between 7 & 8 o'clock. One of the principal partners, Sam Cha, did not come to Cha Wa Lane. East Shut kept a steward's room for such of the employees as did not live inside; for making up the accounts, receiving the pledge and keeping the money.
Every morning a bag (marked J7) was taken to the Bank for the Bank, & the Bank was replenished throughout the day by $150 at a time. Any property pledged was sent over in a bag to the depôt from the gambling house, throughout the day, so that it should not be on the premises in case of a sudden raid by the Police.
