On the receipt of
Mr. Francis' letter I recognized
that either he had been
grossly misled (which was extremely unlikely) or that I
had greatly deceived myself.
It was obviously my duty
to enquire personally
into
the heavy
Police agent
into the matter, but

my difficulty was to identify the
street that
was meant by
"Hong Kai tou" where the
depot was said
I was not
acquainted
with
any
street of that name,
and it turned out to be a
slang
or
local name on the northern
which being East Street (given
verbally to Mr. Francis in
the Trong Koon District), the
name
was not transliterated
as it would have been had
it been given in Cantonese.
I deemed it best on the
whole
to act on
Mr. Francis'
letter without further reference
to him as I was afraid that his informant might become
alarmed
