Colonial Secretary's Office,

17th July 1897.

Sir,

Now that I receive $250 a mouth, it is impossible for an officer to live even in tolerable comfort, I earnestly hope that this application may favourably record, and such relief granted to me, as to His Excellency and the Commissioners may seem fit.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant,

C. H. Hastings

Assistant Harbour Master.

...

I am directed to inform you that His Excellency the Governor regrets his inability to entertain your application of the 14th for an increase to the salary of your office, but is prepared to receive any further representations you may desire to make to the Secretary of State.

N... Commander Hastings R.N.

Assistant Harbour Master.
