I have been relieved from the pecuniary pressure, which I would otherwise have suffered, and which I now feel keenly.
It may be said that in having held such numerous acting appointments, and for such long periods, I have been fortunate, not only in having opportunities for showing my ability for the discharge of higher duties, but also in receiving the emoluments attached thereto.
But it should be noted that, compared with the superior appointments for lengthened periods, the remuneration I received was much less than that paid to the substantive holders.
