The Hotel was originally erected by the "Austin Arms Hotel and Building Company Limited" registered in 1888, which also owned a terrace of houses known as "Mountain View". The original capital of the Company was $200,000, which was subsequently increased to $480,000 by the issue of Debentures to the amount of $100,000 and by raising a further $100,000 and $30,000 on first and second mortgages. The "Mountain View" property was subsequently disposed of at a loss of some $105,000, the Company went into liquidation, and the Hotel Property was finally purchased for $180,050 by Mr J. D. Humphreys, who recently sold it to the War Department.
