the Eastern Mail Service, I have the honour to transmit for your consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, expressing the opinion of the Committee of that Body on the subject.
2. I also enclose for your information a copy of a report by the Postmaster General with table attached, from which you will observe that, as far as can be calculated on the data given, the proportion of the cost of the Eastern Mail Service to be borne by this Colony on the basis proposed by the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury will be approximately £11,896 instead of £6,000 as heretofore.
3. The only points touched upon by the Chamber of Commerce on which I have any remarks to offer are those connected with the question of paying on a mileage basis.
Endl. 1. 5th June, 1897.
Encl: 2. 27th January 1897.
