the enclosed copy of a letter Encl: 2 from D. Atkinson, Acting Colonial Surgeon, in which he recommends the
appointment of Dr Swan as an Assistant Surgeon in the Medical Department in preference to obtaining the services
of a medical officer from home.
The salary Dr Swan is prepared to accept is $60 a month less than that which I suggested in my despatch under reference should be attached.
As to the appointment of Assistant Surgeon, and I therefore beg to recommend Dr Swan's appointment on both grounds of economy and for the reasons stated by Dr Atkinson - at a salary of $240 a month with an allowance of $60 a month in lieu of quarters and of $24
