The cost of the proposed building with out-offices, furniture, &c. is estimated at $60,000 and the annual expenditure, less any fees that may be received, at $10,000.

Mr. May has submitted a design for such a hospital, prepared by Messrs. PALMER & TURNER, who estimate the cost of the building at $50,000. The design* is attached.

It will be observed from this design that the accommodation prepared is slightly in excess of that originally proposed by Mr. May.

Hospital for Women and Children with Training Institute for Nurses.

Those who were questioned with regard to Mr. May's scheme were also questioned with regard to this scheme.

Their views on the subject of a Hospital for Women and Children have already been given in the report on Mr. May's scheme.

As regards the Training Institute for Nurses, they are unanimously of the opinion that the want of nurses in the Colony is a very urgent one. To meet this want at once some of the witnesses proposed that 2, others that 3 and Dr. JORDAN that 5 nurses be obtained from home forthwith and that their services be available for private nursing, the fees charged for such nursing to be devoted towards the cost of defraying the expenses of placing the services of such nurses at the disposal of the public. In addition to obtaining nurses from home, it is proposed that an Institute for Training Probationers in Nursing in the Colony should be established, so that such probationers, when their training has been completed, may be able to take the place of the nurses from home, whose services may be either reduced or entirely dispensed with.

It is suggested that the Institute for Training Nurses should be attached to the Government Civil Hospital, as it is considered that this would afford the best opportunities for training nurses, and should be under the management of the Government and that the probationers should have the advantage of learning to nurse by attending cases in the Civil Hospital and in the proposed Hospital for Women and Children if the latter be attached to and under the same management as the Civil Hospital.

The site proposed for erecting a building as quarters for the nursing probationers is immediately to the east of the present Medical Staff Quarters and in close proximity to the Civil Hospital and the proposed site for the Women and Children's Hospital.

If the scheme for training nurses is to be carried on at the Government Civil Hospital, an Assistant Matron will have to be appointed in addition to the present staff of nurses at the Civil Hospital.

The following estimate of the cost of establishing the scheme is contained in the report of Dr. ATKINSON, Dr. ARNES, and Miss EASTMOND, dated 21st March, 1897:--
