leave of absence from the said Corpo from 27th April instant to the 9th October next and the said Sir William Robinson hath agreed to grant the said application upon the said George Whigham Watling entering into this Agreement upon the terms and conditions herein after contained. Now this Agreement witnesseth as follows:

1.

The said Sir William Robinson doth hereby grant unto the said George Whigham Watling leave of absence from his duties as Quarter Master Sergeant of the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps from the 27th April, 1897 up to 9th October 1897 both days inclusive.

2.

The said Sir William Robinson will cause to be paid to the said George Whigham Watling through the Crown Agent in London the sum of One hundred and eighty dollars for his services during his absence on leave as aforesaid and such pay shall be calculated at the rate of 4 shillings to the dollar.

3.

The said George Whigham Watling hereby agrees to provide as his substitute during his absence on leave aforesaid Sergeant Luke Heathcote Leverson Royal Artillery, and to pay the said Luke Heathcote Leverson for whatever duties he shall perform as Quarter Master Sergeant of the Hongkong Volunteer Corps.

The said George Whigham Watling hereby agrees that he will serve the Government as Quarter Master Sergeant of the Hongkong Volunteer Corps for the term of five years to be calculated from the 1st May, 1897 at the rate of One hundred and eighty dollars per annum, current money sterling, and that notwithstanding the provisions of clause 2 of this Agreement he will not after his return from leave of absence make an application for an increase of salary.
