Spanish Town, 32 April 18th

Dear Capt; Hastings

You are about to restore much regret to hear about the public service in Jamaica.

I first met you in the parish of St Thomas where we both worked! I noticed your zeal and diligence as Emigrations Agent and from what I saw of you and from what I heard, I sought your help out when I wanted assistance in my work and I was not disappointed. For many months and up to the time I ceased to be employed as Acting District Court Judge, you helped in the discharge of the duties of Deputy Coroner. You displayed the same qualities of industry, intelligence, and zeal as I had seen in your special Office. Your unlooked for aptitude for the unaccustomed work would have surprised me more if I had not witnessed similar instances in the Colony.
