With respect to the question of the salary of the Superintendent, I am still of opinion that a salary of $1,200 a year is not more than a reasonable initial remuneration for the post, which is one of considerable responsibility and importance, and I may point out that there are three other subordinate officers of the department whose pay exceeds that figure, besides five other officers who draw more than $1,000 a year. I hope, therefore, that on reconsideration of the question you will be disposed to sanction the amount which I originally suggested and which has been provided in the Estimates for the current year.
