DS June 1896
In reply to your letter of the 24th instant I am directed by M. Secretary Chamberlain to inform you that he cannot interfere with the discretion which under the terms of the Hong Kong Agreement they were at liberty to exercise as to the retention of gun four services; and M. Chamberlain regrets that.
certified April 1895 & 18th April 1896 which are now in my possession. On the completion of my 3 years agreement in 1895, Mr Lethbridge being absent on leave in England, I was informed that my services could not be extended but was temporarily retained until the Superintendent's return in April 1896 when I was finally discharged and a passage to England ticket handed me for where I arrived on the 17th June.
I should be much obliged if you would kindly cause enquiry to be made with a view of my being reinstated or failing that I should be glad of a similar appointment.
