RECO REC 23 APR 98
I have the honor to submit to you the following facts :-
1. We are informed privately by the Right Rev: Bishop of Victoria, Hong-Kong, that he intends to resign his office at the end of the current year.
2. The appointment to the Bishopric, as we understand, is vested in the Crown, at the nomination of H.M. Secretary for the Colonies.
3. Of the 34 Anglican Clergy belonging to the Diocese of Hong-Kong, 28 are Agents of this Society.
4. We believe that it is the case that previously to the nomination of Bishop Smith in the year 1849, of Bishop Alford in 1867, and of Bishop Burdon in 1874, H.M. Secretary for the Colonies did this Society the favour of conferring with it in the selection of suitable persons to be submitted to Her Majesty for appointment.
I venture to ask that on the resignation of Bishop Burdon being sent to you and accepted, or previous to the selection of a successor, you will extend the same kindness as has been shown on former occasions to this Society which has, and has had for many years so large an interest in the religious work of
that Diocese.
I am, Sir,
Your Obedient and Faithful Servant,
M.T. Fox
Hon. Clerical Sec: C.M.S.
