I am at the same time to request that the German ambassador may be reminded that the fine was commutation of a much severer punishment and that the case was the second of the kind on the part of German officers within a short time, as will be seen on reference to the enclosed papers relating to the case.
The opinions given by the Colonial Attorney General and the Chief Justice will be communicated to Count "Hatzfeldt.
I think the fine imposed on rehearing of the other case ...

Referring to your despatch No.139 of the 9th ultimo, and to the correspondence respecting the trespass on the colony by the officers of the German mail steamer Hohenzollern, I have the honour to enclose copy of which has passed with the Foreign Office, and request you as an act of grace to refund fines paid by the officers in question.
