¡ as the Grand Secretary to make his sojourn in our capital both pleasant and interesting. Li Hung Chang added that he was very desirous of the honour of being presented to Her Majesty the Queen: and I said that I would not fail to inform Your Lordship of the wish of His Excellency.

The superior members of the Grand Secretary's suite will not be numerous, and, as at present arranged, will include his adopted son, Li Ching-fang, recently Chinese Minister in Japan; Lo Feng-lu, his private Secretary and ex-Secretary to the Board of Admiralty; a Chinese Secretary; a physician who has studied foreign medicine; and two or three special protégés from his own province, who will join him during his journey southwards.

I have the honour to inclose herewith to Your Lordship copy of a letter which I have addressed to the Governors of Hongkong, the Straits Settlements, and Ceylon, and to the Resident at Aden with regard to civilities which they may think well to offer to the Grand Secretary whilst passing through their several jurisdictions.

I have &c.,
(Signed) W. Beauclerk.
