Wuchow will, if the matter be arranged as your Lordship desires, rapidly become, I feel sure, the centre of a very large British trade, immensely profitable as the distributing centre to Hong Kong. Although steamers cannot get above this place, foreign merchandize will easily be carried in native junks to Tsungchow, which supplies a large population, and also to Nanning, where they will be able to compete with imports viâ Tonquin on favourable terms.
