From conclusion of the Treaty of Nanking in 1843 till early in 1859 the Governor of Hong Kong was Superintendent of British Trade in China. Since that date and under the Tientsin Treaty of 1858 by which Great Britain obtained the power of having a Minister at Peking, British trading interests have been cared for by the Minister.

J. M. & Co. and B. & S. have under their management over 9/10ths of the total British Tonnage trading on the China Coast that would be affected by the proposed Ordinance.

Steamers under the management of J. M. & Co. and B. & S., are of the highest class; the majority of them were built and engined under Board of Trade inspection, and they are equipped in a most thorough way.

Passengers travelling in their Steamers are gentry and traders almost without exception, who demand superior accommodation, and, as a matter of fact, get far more space and better food than are required by the Hong Kong Regulation, which are framed for Coolie traffic.
