With reference to your letter of the 27th ultimo I beg to inform you that Despard has been unable to present himself for medical examination owing to slight indisposition. He has arranged to be examined on Wednesday next.
I have forwarded the enclosure to your letter referred to above to Constable Grant.
I enclose letters from Robert Macdonald and James Cormack applying for employment in the Hong Kong Police, and the replies of the Chief Constable of Aberdeen to my enquiries as to the character and medical record of these men.
These are the candidates mentioned in my letter of the 24th ultimo, and I consider them very suitable men for service in Hong Kong.
I would recommend that if passed by the doctor as physically fit, they be both engaged even if Grant and Despard are also pronounced fit for service.
There are always one or more vacancies in the Hong Kong Police and it is so extremely difficult to obtain candidates from Police Forces in the United Kingdom that it would seem undesirable to reject a suitable candidate when one offers.
