He will also be able under the supervision of the Visiting Surgeon to furnish correct returns of death occurring in the Hospital. I agree with the Commission that the salary of the Resident Surgeon should be defrayed by Government. Indeed, unless I had promised that, subject to your sanction, the salary would be paid by the Government, the directors would never have consented to such an appointment, which would have caused much irritation and delayed reforms in the Hospital. I hope therefore that this expenditure will be approved.
As to the recommendation that a Steward be appointed, I do not propose to take any steps at present to carry it out, as further experience may prove that the presence of a Resident Surgeon in the Hospital may render...
