the Public Works Department to that of Warder in Victoria Gaol.

I have filled the vacancy thus caused in the Public Works Department by the appointment of Mr Wolfe, late Sapper in the Royal Engineers, on one month's probation, with a view to his entering into an agreement for 3 years if he gives satisfaction:

3. M. Mears' salary was $70 a month, besides exchange compensation, a privilege to which his successor will not be entitled, and as $80 a month is the lowest sum for which the services of a suitable man can be obtained, I have fixed Mr. Wolfe's salary at that figure, and trust that you will have no objection.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your Most Obedient Humble Servant, William Robinson
