Mr. Brewin possesses a competent knowledge of the Chinese language, which is absolutely essential to the proper discharge of the duties of the post for which he applies, and is in my opinion well qualified by his education and general abilities to succeed Dr Eitel in the appointment, and I strongly recommend his application to your favourable consideration.
