27. Before my departure for Hong Kong, I increased my life insurance from £950 to £1,000, and in addition to the usual premium I had to pay "Extras" for living in the Tropics.

28. Had I known, I would not have been put to the extra expenditure for life insurance.

29. If I have deducted the compulsory contribution of £2:10:7 to the Widows and Orphans' Fund, my annual available salary would be further reduced to £361.13/-.

30. In conclusion, I would beg further to point out that my post in the Public Works Department is the highest I can occupy there, being as it is a technical Department, whilst I have most respectfully to state that the best appointments outside of it generally fall to Cadets.

Particulars of my qualifications may be gathered from the attached copies of reference (the official and the unofficial) to my work, and from the Honourable the Director of Public Works, who I may also add that during the Epidemic of Bubonic Plague in 1894, I had the honour of being appointed, by H.E. Sir William Robinson, Secretary to the Commission on Chinese.

I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Office Assistant & Accountant.
