20, Mr. Chadwick wrote in reply as follows, "I am extremely sorry to learn that your salary is less than what you expected it to be. When I made enquiries to find a person for the post, I certainly understood that the salary was what I stated it to be equivalent at least to £400 a year. I would not have undertaken the task, had I thought it would have been less. In future I shall take great care to have the fullest particulars in black and white, before undertaking to recommend anyone. All that I can say is that I hope that you will before long receive an increase of salary.

21, I resolved to take no further action till the work I had on hand had been completed and was understood by those permanently employed on it.

I put full weight on my dealings with Mr. Chadwick knowing he was the Government representative so far as my business was concerned, and I cannot help thinking I was fully justified in accepting with confidence all the verbal information I received, and which I am so well aware was given, as it was received, in the best of faith.
