then worked separately, and in the Public Works Department the Clerical Branch was in charge of an officer designated "Correspondence Clerk" at a Salary of $2,400 per Annum, whilst the Store Branch was supervised by an officer designated "Second Clerk and Storekeeper" at a Salary of $1,440 per Annum, with a personal allowance of £60 per Annum extra.

There was a total annual expenditure in the Public Works Department in the following Branches of $6,300 made up as follows: -

Clerical Branch, $2,400

Accounting do. $2,400

Stores do. $1,500

Total $6,300.

By 10th January, 1894 the Public Works Department and Water and Drainage Departments were amalgamated, the combining of the Clerical, Accounting both resulting. Whilst in the enlarged Public Works Dept. the posts of "Correspondence Clerk", and "Second Clerk & Storekeeper" were abolished.

Under the new arrangement the "Clerical, Accounting and Stores" Branches were put in charge of an officer, under the new title of "Office Assistant and Accountant" at a salary of $2,760 per Annum, being against the previous annual Expenditure of $6,300.
