DESPATCH. C.O 24369 RECO REG 26 NOV 36. 89 for Hanefed
(Minutes.) Private Secretary
Mr Wood has held the post of Office Assistant, Public Works Dept since 1891. Before he accepted this post, he had a very good commercial position as Secretary to Messrs Garry, Henry & Engineers.
He seems to have been somewhat rushed into his tricky appointment: Mr Chadwick assured him he would have a salary of from £400 to 500 a year, he was told nothing of the Widows & Orphans fund, or of some extra expense in insuring his life.
He was told nothing of the Cadet System & was assured that promotion would be easy if he gave satisfaction.
There seems to have been great pressure of work in the office since he has been in Hongkong, & he seems always to have shown himself an efficient and capable officer.
... The your backs of his petition.
