Mr. Chatham, drawing the exceptional salary in dollars that, it is understood, was in addition due to Exchange Compensation, Mr. Chatham drew upon entering the service. The other five are practically upon the same footing and their responsibilities the same; in fact, in their respective branches, they hold a similar position to that occupied by the Assistant Surveyor General previous to 1892.

Messrs. Chatham and Pockett are not generally eligible for acting appointments except in the event of the absence of the Director of Public Works; in the ordinary course of events, they can look forward to gradual promotion in the service; therefore, opportunities for them to increase, even temporarily, their emoluments are likely to be of rare occurrence.
