England and in the Spring of 1888 I came out again to join a Solicitor in this Colony. I enclose a copy of a letter written by Dr. Peter Williams;
on that occasion.
In this Colony I have gained a considerable experience in all branches of the law and I think I may say
that I am particularly conversant with the law and practice of Bankruptcy. The gentlemen in or connected with this Colony who can speak as to
my professional capacity are. (1) Sir Fielding Clarke lately Chief Justice of Hongkong but now Chief Justice of Jamaica.
(2) Dr. Carrington now Chief Justice of Hongkong.
(3) The Honourable Dr. Goodman Attorney General of Hongkong
(4) The Honourable St. E. Pollock Acting Attorney General.
(5) The Honourable A. G. Rice, Queen's Judge.
(6) Mr. C. J. Ackroyd lately Puisne Judge and Acting Chief Justice.
With respect to my general
character, Mr. J. Grover of Messrs. Grover, Smith, & Jerningham (3 Grovenor Place, London S.W.) kindly allows us to mention his
name and a reference to him. The Honourable C. H. Northcote Senior Queen's Judge of Jamaica is also well acquainted with me.
Perhaps I may be permitted to add that in 1889 or 1890, when I thought there was some prospect of the retirement of the Crown Solicitor
of this Colony, my late Uncle the Right Honourable H. H. Smith wrote to Lord Knutsford who promised to bear it in mind in connection with any future appointment.
I am informed that the Crown Solicitor now proposes to retire and if the appointment in Jamaica is not open to me perhaps you will allow me to apply for the Crown Solicitorship of this Colony.
I have the honour to be
Your most Obedient Servant
Reace
I enclose a testimonial from the Chief Justice.
