sive of $8,069.39. Light dues,paid through the Harbour Of-
fice, and I may observe that ordinarily the proportion of
light ques to other collections at the Harbour Office,is
much greater than two thiras, frequently nearly equal. In the month, taken as an illustration, the large amount for
gunpowder storage, ran up the Harbour Master's collection.
Every department charged with the collect-
ion of money has a shroff, or officers secured for the act-
ual handling of the coin, albeit the Head of the Department
is jointly responsible, but between him and his responsibi- lity,comes the man secured, for the daily and hourly collect
ions,now the Collector of Light dues is a subordinate in
the Harbour Department, therefore has no separate shroff,but in view of the large cash transactions he is responsible
for that he should not have the use of the Departmental
shroff,suas inequitable.
A good half of the Light ques are collected by the shroff from the local agents, on debit notes (when there are any Agents) but even then, the cash handled at the Harbour Office on account of light aues, is considerably more than double any coin the shroff handles on Colonial
account, at the Mercantile Marine Office.
