REGE 6 MAR 96)

Central Police Station.

27th. January,1896.

sir,

I have the honour to report that in June

1894 Mr. May, Captain Supt. of Police, asked me to report upon

a telegram which he received through the Colonial Secretary

here from the Premier of Melbourne (C. S.0.1506,1894) stating

that a Chinaman or a Chinese firm in this Colony named

"Qcong Ah Mouy "had shipped a large quantity of counterfeit

shillings per S. S. "Chingtu" which sailed from here on the

16th. May and arrived at Melbourne on the 11th. June, 1894,

and that the counterfeit shillings aiscovered in Melbourne

were alleged to have been minted in HongKong. From enquiries

Land

I instituted,I find there no such firm as "Quong Ah Mouy"

Ling existed in HongKong, the nearest approach of the name of a

firm was "Kwan Wo Lung",100,Wing Lok Street. This fir.

shipped 1013 packages of general merchandise by the S. S.

"Chingtu" on that particular voyage, but the firm being a

respectable anu old established one there was no suspicion

attached.

In my report I also mentioned that as far as

ing

I knew there was no illicit „int of any kind existed in

this Colony,but I said that

The Hon. W. C. H. HastingsR. N.

counterfeit coins of all kinds

were

Acting Captain Supt. of Police.
