Letter to Lieutenant General E. F. Chapman, ^.!
from
558
the British Military Attacle to the Chinese Amy in the
Field dated Tientsin,
March 23rd, 1695,
1 learn from Tyler, late commender of the Ting
yuan, that they found the extreme cold had a very weak-
ening effect upon their guns in some case One 3* Q..
Hotchkiss gun burst behind the trunnions at the 4th
round, and a 24 c.m. gun had a coil split horizontelly,
in the first case the fracture was doubtless caused at
the first round and succeeding ones aggravated the
damage until the gun burst. The Chinese et first
kept their guns in the fleet loaded with common shell in
readiness for an attack, but after a time this was
stopped so as to be able to fire 2 blant charges first
to warm the gun.
He also says he has not the least doubt that
the Japanese used some hich explosive at the battle of
the Yalu, though he does not think it was melinite.
