Letter from British Military Attaché to
Japanese Army in the Field, dated Kosen, South of
Wei hai wei harbour, 10th February, 1895.
It is a long time since I wrote to you, but
there has been nothing of interest to tell you until
recently. The landing at Yungcheng Bay was effected
most smoothly. To begin with, it was an ideal landing
place -The ships were able to come in close to the
about 400 yards was the distance to the nearest

and steam launches could go within two or three
yards of the beach Small floating piers were made by
joining two "sampana" together with planks, and the
boats were towed alongside these piers by the steam
launches, though many boats wore also unloaded directly
on the beach. Each package was very fully labelled, and
there appeared to be no confusion whatever in taking
everything to its allotted place on shore. The absence
of noise was remarkable.
At Kayenko, the landing place of the port
Arthur army, the following was the arrangement of
duties.
