No.26

sir,

CAETOF,

12th Kovember 1995.

444

In continuation of my despatch No.25 of the

1st Movember last, I have the Lonour to report that

the alarm which filled the Officiel mind when the plot

Go seize the city was discovered at the end of last

ronth has now subsided, and that the Provinci al

Government seems disposed to rost satisfied with its

good fortune in having forestalled a serious rising.

There is a general impression among the officials that

& searching investigation would put the local Govern-

ment in possession of inconvenient information, and

compel them to follow it up with such drastic measures

of retribution as would probably precipitate the

rebellion which has for the prosent been averted,

In all, three men have been executed for

complicity in the movement; these confessed to having

accepted scrvice under the ringleader Sun Wen, and

their part of the work was to hire premises in Canton

for the reception of arms and explosives. In their

confession ticase rom stated that the plot conceived by

Sun Won, whom the authoritico look upon as tho Chief

conspirator, Was to capture the city, and then roduce

this province and the provinces of Kwangsi, Junnan and

Fuhkien, and establish an independent Kingdom; but no

importance com be attached to the words extracted from

prisoners under torture, and probably their whole con-

fossion was morely an acquiescence in revelations

suggested by the examiners.
