Further letter from the Deputy Master of the
Melbourne Mint to the Master of the Mint, London forwarding a counterfeit shilling found in circulation by the National Bank of Tasmania, Launceston. Mr Anderson
stated that :-
*It would seem that, a similar attempt is being made there (at Launceston,Tasmania) as was attempted in
Melbourne before, and by the same parties in China, who have, by e new obverse, got quit of some of the means of detection, and in all probability have in view some much larger attack on the silver seignorage then the small attempts hitherto made
Royal Mint,
This coin was of the fineness of 895.
It exhibited similar slight deviations from accuracy of design to those found in the counterfeits forwarded
in the preceding year
26th September 1895.
